The Hottest Haircuts of 2026 (And How to Style Them at Home)

One of my favorite parts of being a hairstylist is the moment a client sits down in my chair and says, "I want something that feels like *me* again." Whether that's a fresh set of bangs, a new layer structure, or a cut that finally gives their hair the movement it's been missing — there's nothing better than watching someone fall in love with their hair.

But here's the thing: a great haircut deserves a great at-home routine to match. You shouldn't have to wait until your next appointment for your hair to look good. So consider this your personal guide — straight from your stylist to your bathroom mirror — covering the three cuts that are having a major moment in 2026, what they do for you, and exactly how to style them at home with the right tools and products.

🦋 The Butterfly Haircut

hottest hair trensds of 2026

The butterfly haircut is one of those cuts that genuinely transforms the way hair moves and feels.

Named for the wing-like shape the layers create when the hair flows, this cut is all about dramatic, face-framing layers that start high — usually around the crown — and cascade down in soft, sweeping sections throughout the length of the hair.

What It Is and What It Does For You

What makes this cut so special is the volume and dimension it brings. If your hair has been sitting flat and lifeless, the butterfly cut is essentially giving it a whole new personality. It works best on medium to long hair, and it's especially beautiful on anyone who wants to add the illusion of fullness without losing length. The layers are cut in a way that creates that gorgeous "wings open" silhouette — your hair literally looks like it's in motion, even when you're standing still.

It's also incredibly versatile. Wear it down and the layers do all the talking. Pull it up and you'll have those beautiful, effortless face-framing pieces falling around your face. Either way, there's a softness and femininity to this cut that photographs absolutely beautifully.

How to Style It at Home

The key to nailing the butterfly cut at home is all in the blow-dry technique — and having the right tools makes it so much easier than you'd think.

  1. Start on damp hair. Before you even pick up your dryer, apply a leave in with heat protection through your mid-lengths and roots. I love Evo Day of Grace Pre Style Primer.

  2. Now, grab your Dyson Blow Dryer. If you've been on the fence about investing in one, the butterfly cut will make you a believer.

The Dyson's airflow is powerful but controlled, which means you can direct the air exactly where you need it without creating frizz or disturbing your sections.

Rough-dry your hair about 70-80% first — just enough to set the shape and remove the bulk of the moisture.

  3. Then, section your hair and apply REF Stockholm Fiber Mousse to each section, roots to ends, as you do your round brush blowout. This structure mousse is incredibly thick so a little goes along way. It gives your hair the body it needs to hold that voluminous shape throughout the day. Think of it as the foundation for everything that comes next.

4. Use the Olivia Garden 1¾" Nano Thermic Round Brush to work through each layer. This brush size is genuinely the sweet spot for this style — large enough to create that smooth, voluminous curve in the layer, but not so big that you lose definition.

Roll the brush under each section and aim the dryer at the brush as you slowly pull it through, directing the layer outward and away from the face.

This is what creates that beautiful "wing" effect. Take your time with the front sections especially, as those are what really frame your face and make the cut recognizable.

5. Finish with a light mist of REF Extreme Hold Hairspray — this spray holds all day without any stiffness or crunch, so your layers keep that natural, airy movement while staying exactly where you placed them.

Curtain Bangs

What They Are and What They Do For You

Curtain bangs are the bang style that has genuinely earned their permanent place in the hair hall of fame. Longer than traditional bangs, they part softly in the middle and sweep outward to each side, framing the face like — you guessed it — a pair of curtains. They blend seamlessly into the rest of the hair, which makes them feel more like a face-framing feature than a traditional fringe.

What they do for your face is nothing short of lovely. Curtain bangs soften strong jawlines, add balance to wider foreheads, and bring attention to the eyes and cheekbones. They work on every face shape, which is rare for a bang style, and they're flattering on straight, wavy, and even lightly textured hair.

They also grow out so gracefully. Because they're longer and already angled away from the face, the grow-out phase blends naturally into layers rather than becoming an awkward situation. For anyone who's been "bang-curious" but nervous to commit, curtain bangs are the most forgiving and flattering entry point — and once you have them, it's hard to imagine going back.

How to Style Them at Home

Curtain bangs are where technique really pays off — and once you have it down, the whole thing takes about five minutes.

Section

Start on damp bangs with a small amount of REF Styling Mousse worked through just that section. The mousse is wonderful for this because it gives your bangs the structure they need to hold their shape and part cleanly, while still looking natural and moveable rather than stiff. It also helps smooth out any frizz before you even pick up the dryer, which means a smoother, more polished result with less effort.

Wrap Dry

Next, use a small paddle brush, like Framar Mini Detangle Brush to wrap dry your fringe one way and then the other, isolating the heat on the root. This will remove any cowlicks.

Next, using your Olivia Garden 1¾ Round Brush with your Dyson Blow Dryer to round brush the mid-length and ends. You can round brush forward or backward - each creates a slightly different look.

Round Brush

You can also roll the brush under the bang section on the right side and aim the airflow in that direction, then repeat on the left. The key is to work both sides so they learn to sit apart from each other and create that signature open, curtain-like fall. Keep alternating until the bangs are fully dry and beautifully set.

Finish

Finish with a light hold spray of Davines Medium Hairspray right at the part to keep everything in place. Your curtain bangs will stay swept and styled all day without ever looking overdone.

Birkin Bangs

Named after the iconic Jane Birkin, these bangs have been having a revival that shows no signs of slowing down. Birkin bangs are wispy, feathery, and intentionally imperfect — they sit just at or slightly above the brow and are cut in a way that creates soft, separated pieces rather than a dense, blunt fringe.

What They Are and What They Do For You

What Birkin bangs do is add instant character and softness to any face. They're one of those small changes that makes people say, "You look so good — did you do something different?" without being able to put their finger on it. They frame the eyes, make cheekbones look more defined, and give your overall look a kind of effortless, European elegance that feels very now.

The best part? They're genuinely low-maintenance once you understand how to style them. They're not meant to be perfect — that's the whole point. They're meant to look like they just *fell* that way.

They work beautifully on almost all hair textures, though wavy and fine hair tend to really take to them naturally. They pair well with every cut from a blunt bob to long layers, and they grow out gracefully — no awkward in-between phase where you're desperately pinning them back.

How to Style Them at Home

The number one thing to keep in mind with Birkin bangs is that less is more. You want to enhance their natural texture, not fight it.

On damp bangs, take the smallest amount — truly just a pea-sized drop — of Cult & King Jelly and emulsify it between your fingers before running them through your bangs. This cream is a hidden gem for fine and wispy work like this. It adds just enough definition and hold to keep the pieces separated and intentional-looking, while still feeling completely weightless. It also adds a beautiful, healthy shine without any greasiness.

Using the Dyson Blow Dryer on a low heat setting, tip your head slightly forward and let your bangs fall naturally as you rough-dry them with your fingers. You're not trying to shape them dramatically here — you're just removing the moisture and letting them find their own flow. If they settle a little unevenly, that's actually perfect for this style.

If they're sitting a little flat at the roots, a tiny amount of REF Dry Shampoo Paste right at the base and a quick finger-scrunch will bring them back to life. The goal is always that soft, slightly undone finish — completely charming and completely you.

Bixie Haircut

The bixie is the perfect in-between for anyone dreaming of going shorter without fully committing to a pixie. It combines the length of a bob with the textured, piecy layers of a pixie — the result is something that feels simultaneously edgy and soft, bold and effortless. It lifts the face, draws attention to your eyes and bone structure, and works beautifully on fine to medium hair by creating the illusion of thickness and volume

For anyone with a little natural wave or texture, the bixie is an absolute dream — the texture just amplifies everything the cut is already doing for you.

This cut thrives on texture, and the styling couldn't be simpler.
