Bond Treatment Comparison for Damaged Hair? K18 vs Olaplex 3

Experiencing dry, frizzy hair or breakage? Almost everyone experiences some type of hair damage in their life whether it’s from chemical services, like highlights or hair relaxers, heat styling, rough brushing/towel drying, or environmental factors. The best way to tackle hair damage is with a reparative hair treatment.

In recent years, K18 Leave-In Mask, and Olaplex No. 3, have emerged as key players in the realm of hair treatments. Each product claims to repair and strengthen hair, but what sets them apart? Let's delve into the differences and similarities of these hair care wonders.

Bond Treatment Comparison for Damaged Hair: K18 vs Olaplex 3 vs Living Proof Triple Bond Complex

K18 Leave-In Mask:

  • K18 is a revolutionary hair care brand that focuses on molecular repair. The K18 Leave-In Mask uses patented K18PEPTIDE, a bioactive peptide, to repair and restore damaged hair by targeting the internal structure of the hair shaft. It does this by reconnecting broken keratin (a protein that makes up 80% of the hair shaft) chains and repairing horizontal disulfide bonds resulting in stronger, healthier hair.

The standout for this product is it can replace conditioner and styling cream making it worth the $75 price tag.

Key Features:

  • K18PEPTIDE Molecular repair technology
  • Targets internal hair structure
  • Reconnects broken keratin chains
  • Strengthens and restores damaged hair

How to Use:

  • Following shampoo, gently towel dry your hair. Apply two pumps to damp hair, Leave on for four minutes, then style as usual.

Bond Treatment Comparison for Damaged Hair: K18 vs Olaplex 3 vs Living Proof Triple Bond Complex

Olaplex No. 3:

  • Olaplex No. 3 is part of the Olaplex Bond Maintenance System and is often referred to as a "hair perfector." It works by repairing broken disulfide bonds within the hair, which are often damaged during chemical processes like coloring or perming. Disulfide bonds are little couples of the hair shaft that when together, give your hair strength and porosity. These couples break up under stress from factors such as heat, hair coloring or tugging (bad brushing/tight hairstyles, etc). When they break, your hair looks frazzled, broken, overprocessed, and dull. It also has a harder time holding on to hair color. Although Olaplex 3 can work as a protective step, its primary goal is to repair damaged hair.

Key Features:

  • Repairs broken disulfide bonds
  • Complements professional salon treatments
  • Strengthens and protects hair
  • Ideal for at-home use between salon visits

How to Use:

  • Before shampooing, apply a dime-sized amount to dry or damp hair, and wait 15 minutes. Follow with shampoo and conditioner. For triple the results, apply Olaplex 0 throughout the hair and wait 15 minutes, before applying Olaplex 3. Follow with your regular shampoo.

Comparative Analysis:

While all three products aim to repair and strengthen hair, they differ in their approaches and how to use them. K18 is the most convenient by acting as a treatment, styling cream, and leave-in conditioner in one; however, it is a thicker product so I recommend it for medium to thicker hair types or wavy/curly hair. Olaplex 3 is a game-changer for extremely damaged hair as its primary goal is repairing broken disulfide bonds; however, unlike the other two it requires its step before shampooing. You also can overuse Olaplex 3. Apply once per week for damaged hair and up to three times per week for extremely damaged hair. Any more than that can cause brittleness.

 Considerations:

  • Hair Type: Different hair types may respond differently to each product. Some individuals may find one product more suitable for their specific needs.
  • Treatment Frequency: The recommended frequency of use varies for each product. Understanding how often to incorporate each treatment into your routine is crucial for optimal results.
  • Complementary Products: It's essential to consider other products within each brand's lineup that may enhance the effectiveness of the chosen treatment.

Conclusion:

In the quest for healthier, more resilient hair, the choice between K18 Leave-In Mask, and Olaplex No. 3, depends on individual preferences, hair type, and specific needs. Experimenting with these advanced hair care treatments can unlock a world of transformation, allowing you to achieve the luscious locks you've always desired.
